Read my blurb-length review for In Review Online here: Begins as a charming and heartwarming love letter from a son to his Italian supermodel mother who made a social impact on the industry, but quickly veers into being a movie about himself and his own lifelong obsession with her. Much of the film feels more like a behind the scenes featurette for the finished product than a completed film.  If the lost privacy of a supermodel is a central theme to the film, then constantly invading her space against her repeated demands to turn off the camera or stop filming only achieves to establish an intrusive and uncomfortable vibe for the viewer. Perhaps less honest filmmakers would have cut that footage out, but given the nature of the films subject, … A good chunk of this film is immoral and simply should not exist. Like a Jahar Panahi film without any of the empathy, Beniamino intentionally or unintentionally presented himself as the villain of his own movie, constantly filming his mother no matter how much she curses him and pleas for him to stop. Here is a woman who despises the very nature of the image, and he proceeds to shove a camera in her face for over an hour. Worst of all are the sections where he films her while sleeping, which is not cutesy, but a gross violation of trust and consent. Not that any of the other footage is consensual. It's a shame, for Benedetta Barzini is a fascinating subject, and the old interview footage and the coverage of the feminist courses she gives are riveting. If the entire documentary had been about that, it would not have been this unethical. She's refused ad nauseam. She's already spent enough time being watched when she was a supermodel, but as he presses even more, she agrees out of obligation. He shoots her talking with a friend;… Benedetta Barzini, one of the top Italian supermodels of the 1960s, gave up her flourishing fashion career in the early 1970s in favor of studying Marxism and organizing with the Italian Communist Party. Although she was the first Italian model to be on the cover of Vogueand was close friends with powerful larger than life figures such as Diana Vreeland and Andy Warhol, she has been largely left out of the narrative surrounding that particular time period in fashion history, perhaps because history is unkind to outspoken women who are both hot and smart, as they run against the patriarchal capitalist system. At any age, she is at once a gorgeous human being, a brilliant feminist mind and a fantastic… Definitely interesting, but it feels wrong to be watching it.
